How to hang up stuff on your brick walls using drill core bit

core bit drill on walls
We all love to design our house specially the new renovated walls. You already purchased stuff from your favorite furniture store and see those lovely paintings or picture frames that you want to see them hanging on your new brick walls. Now, you may be wondering how to put them on the brick walls? Here’s my simple guide in how to place them perfectly.

(Materials you may need: Drill or Drilling machines, Masonry core bit and 1½-inch masonry core bit)

  • 1 – Insert or place the masonry core bit into your drilling machines. Please see the products manufacturer’s instruction to know which size of drill bit to use for your screws (core bits). I recommends using a 1 ½ inch masonry screws.

  • 2 – Directly drill a ¼ to ½ inch (deeper than the screw itself) hole on the brick. Avoid drilling on mortar.(Please see How to drill granite concretes)

  • 3 – After step 2, replace your drill bit with your masonry screws. Set the setting of your drilling machine into a reverse mode and insert the screw into the pilot hole in your wall bricks. Leave enough of the screw showing to hold your item (picture frames or painting to be displayed).

Here's my tips in drilling granite concretes using Diamond Core Bit drill. Stuffs needed: 3 cm granite, Wet polisher, Dry Masonry or Wet diamond core bit drill and water suction cup.

Steps when drilling granite concrete without water:

    core bit

  • Touch the granite with an angle then move straight gradually.

  • Drill speed between 2000 – 4000 RPM (Rotation per minute)

  • Apply some pressure. Let the core bit do the work.

  • core bit

  • Move the bit in a circular motion to let dust out.

  • Apply less pressure before drilling through

  • You can drill a hole in less than a minute

  • Steps when drilling granite concrete with water:

    core bit

  • When not using center water feed, use a suction cup with pour water.

  • Drill a shallow mark first.

  • core bit

  • Use water suction cup to contain water.

  • Water will cool down the core bit and extend its life.

How to Troubleshoot Diamond Core bits to drilling Machine?

    drilling machine installation
It’s a great relief to finally buy your own Diamond Core Bit Drill from a tool shop. Well, it’s quite expensive though the results are priceless and I know you’re too eager to test it to your very first cutting or drilling project either at home basics to much larger concretes. Lately, we discuss about the importance of core bit drills as well as the proper handling of in using the tools, now we’ll explain how to assemble or troubleshoot the tools to get started with your drilling project.

As we said earlier, there are several types of core bit drill depending on its use and also varies in sizes and structures. Let’s recap, there’s a Diamond core bit which consist of diamond bits binds with metal core to get a smooth and efficient drilling result. A Masonry or Dry core bit (as the name suggest) is use preferably useful in dry drilling concretes as well as the Wet Masonry core bit for wet concrete drilling.

Now when things get out of hand like core bits stuck up or stopped drilling here are the ways and possible reason why it is like that.

The core bit will not cut:

  • Cause: The material is too hard for the diamond specification. Remedy: Match the diamond specification to the material.

  • Cause: The bit is glazed (smooth diamonds). Remedy: Re-sharpen the tool by drilling into abrasive material (sandstone, block etc.)

  • Cause: Excessive speed of rotation. Remedy: Adjust speed of rotation.

  • Cause: The cooling is excessive and causes the tool to aquaplane. Remedy: Reduce the water flow.

  • Cause: Excessive play within the carriage guides. Remedy: Adjust the carriage on the slide to reduce play.

  • Cause: The weight on the tool is insufficient. Remedy: Increase the weight on the tool.

  • Cause: The machine is badly fixed. Remedy: Check that the machine’s fixing is correct.

  • Cause: The motor is too weak. Remedy: Match the motor power to the diameter.

  • Excessive wear of diamond segments:

  • Cause: Insufficient irrigation. Remedy: Adjust the water flow.

  • Cause: Insufficient speed of rotation. Remedy: Adjust speed of rotation.

  • Cause: Excessive speed of advance. Remedy: Reduce speed of advance.

  • Cause: The material is more abrasive than expected. Remedy: Use a blade with a harder diamond specification (see drill-bit selection table).

  • Cause: Too much motor power applied to the tool. Remedy: Match the motor power to the drill diameter.

  • Cause: Too much play on the machine causing vibrations. Remedy: Check the state of the machine.

  • Excessive wear of core bit's steel tube:

  • Cause: The machine is badly anchored. Remedy: Anchor the machine firmly.

  • Cause: The machine is incorrectly adjusted (excessive play in the carriage guides, motor spindle or adapter out of true, etc.). Remedy: Correctly adjust the machine, replace worn parts, correct the play (rollers, bearings, adapters, etc.).

  • Cause: The tool is warped. Remedy: Withdraw any warped tool. If it is relatively new, it may be straightened by the supplier.

  • Cause: The bit is not correctly fixed to the motor spindle. Remedy: Check that the bit is correctly aligned on the motor spindle (straight line).

  • Cause: There are fragments of metal in the bottom of the hole that have not been evacuated by the coolant. Remedy: Remove all the metal fragments from the drilled hole. Temporarily increase the flow of water to clean out the hole and remove any debris that may still be there.

  • Segments broken and lost in the hole:

  • Cause: For a bit with brazed segments, stopping the coolant even for an instant has caused the segments to heat up and destroy the brazing. Remedy: Always ensure the tool is correctly irrigated.

  • Cause: The bit has suffered some knocks in the hole (due to steel or loose debris, etc.) and these have broken the segments. Remedy: Remove the bit from the machine and recover all the bits of steel, segments and debris before introducing a new bit. If any segment debris remains in the hole, there is a risk of very rapid damage to the new bit.

  • Cause: Excessive speed of rotation causes heating up of the segments. Remedy: Take the tool out of service, replace or repair it if possible (consult supplier). Adjust the speed of rotation.

  • Cause: Start up too brutal. Remedy: Always start drilling gently.

  • Cause: Impacts due to the equipment being dropped. Remedy: Avoid dropping the bit on the ground as this can crack the segments.

  • Core Bit jammed in the hole:

  • Cause: Debris is blocked between the core and the bit tube (steel, pieces of material); a steel bar has been drilled “banana shaped”; it has moved during drilling and jammed the bit (wedge effect). Remedy: Disconnect the bit from the machine: use a spanner to turn the bit in both directions until it is released.

  • Cause: Loss of side-clearance of segments. Remedy: Check the side-clearance of the segments. If the play is too little replace the tool.

  • Hope the above troubleshooting list of core bit and drills will help a lot. Good luck with your project and have a good day.

Tips in cutting glass tile using Gilatools Super Sharp Glass Blades

    Core Bit
Do you have guts in cutting or drilling like a pro – I mean a real professional cutting results using diamond core bit drills, as well as cutting tiles by some sort of high quality cutting products such as diamond blade or saw blades? Well it’s easy to imagine but definitely hard engaging it with reality. Cutting or drilling concretes is not that easy since:

Cutting like Pro is definitely not likely for all enthusiasts. You might need to learn more about the types of techniques in cutting before proceeding to do-it-yourself project.

Failure in cutting or drilling may result to a total damage of your concretes such as glass for windows and tiles as well as the tools like core bits which is in fact, very expensive. So that means handling the drilling project properly is as well important.

After analyzing the possible problems above about drilling, one common stance stand out – Proper techniques in drilling. The answers in just a mouse away – Google it! So here’s definitely an example of drilling tile using wet saw blades.

    A short video I found in youtube.com

Instruction video on how to cut glass tile by using a Super Sharp Glass Blades diamond blade on wet tile saw. Please follow the steps below accordingly.

    1. Ensure the glass tile blade is secured on the wet saw properly.

    2. Ensure the water is coming out from the water sprayer or reservoir.

    3. Face the back side up when cutting; be sure to press the glass tile slowly, lightly and steadily.

    4. Allow the diamond blade to do the work.

    5. Avoid adding stress to the last portion of the cut by cutting slowly.

"Pro Cutter Tip: For extra prevention of chipped edges, cut halfway through the width of the glass tile/mosaic on one side, then turn it over and cut the rest of the way through the glass..."

That’s all and hope that you learn something about how the pro do it in cutting glass smoothly. Ciao!

Drill using core bit: Drill like a professional

In the world of home repair, drilling through concretes is as always expected. Drilling to concretes such as on wall to hang picture frames, glass and tube to insert equipments, granite or any concrete masonry material for such either major usage. Some of these materials may be sensitive and when the drilling process is not done properly then may result to damage on materials as well as the tools and the wasted effort on your part.

Drilling like a professional doesn’t only mean you know how to drill properly but also protect yourself too in any case of accident that might occur. Always wear safety goggles, gloves, air mask and protective suit if necessary before doing the drilling project. Air mask is very important when you’re doing a dry core bit drilling since silica dust may harm your eyes while on drilling process.

Now that you’ve done all the safety standards, looking for the right drilling tool is another factor to consider. The tools to be use are depending on the type of drilling project. The points to be considered are the drilling type whether it’s a dry or wet drilling, the area to drill and the materials to be drilled on. Huge drilling project requires tougher tools like diamond core bit drills which consist of diamond bits bind with metals to achieve smooth and efficient drilling core results. The usual concept is the larger the area to drill on the much expensive the tools are. Though leasing some tools may be a great idea but make sure avoid in damaging the tools since it may cost more than it’s worth and also cuts the project budget.

Here are things to considered mention before drilling:

    1. Avoid using Light duty drill for your project. It may not handle too much pressure.

    2. Size matters. The right size of the drill bit which is specifically made for specific concretes or masonry.

    3. Refrain from using ordinary bit drill. They might easily wear out or dull quickly.

The next thing you need to do is to securely attach the core bit drill to the low - speed electric drill. With your safety goggles or glasses in place, and your air mask and heavy gloves put on, place the tip of the drill bit against the mark where you want to drill. Hold the electric drill steady with both hands. Slowly press the speed button so the bit starts to turn slowly. As the bit turns, and then starts to grab the concretes or masonry surface, gently press the electric drill closer to the surface. As the bit grabs and works its way into the surface, keep pressing the electric drill closer.

Don’t put too much pressure on the concretes. Let the core bit drill do the job. Don't try to hurry the drilling process, though! Keep the drill at a low speed, and slowly work the bit into the surface. If you try to drill through masonry at a high rate of speed, the masonry bit can quickly overheat. If you’re using a wet drilling process, then it is much easier since water may act as lubricant and may avoid overheating of the drilling machine and the core bit.

After the drill bit has worked its way an inch or two into the concrete, brick, or masonry, you should carefully pull the drilling machine back. Remove the bit from the hole it's making and clean off any dust and debris. Then, reinsert the drill bit into the hole and continuing drilling. Repeat this process until you have completely drilled the hole.

I found this video on youtube on showing the techniques on how to drill using core bit.
